The first inhabitants who arrived in the district of La Fortuna in 1930.
In 1968, the Volcan Arenal, at that time was a harmless mountain, erupted burying the town of La Fortuna killing hundreds of people. The land lost much value due to the new volcano eruption and many of its inhabitants abandoned the place. However, with time and the constant eruptions, local tourists began to be attracted to this spectacular event of nature only in Costa Rica.
By 1982, La Fortuna begins to experience a transformation from an agricultural activity for tourism, which today is the main generator of resources in the area.
A charming and quiet town, La Fortuna de San Carlos is the entrance to the village of Arenal Volcano, located in Alajuela privincia 70 kilometers northwest of San Jose and connects the Arenal Volcano area with the cloud forest of Monteverde and Santa Elena and the northern lowlands the country.
La Fortuna offers views from different angles to the Arenal Volcano, located 10 kilometers from the village.
In addition to the Volcan Arenal, the town offers other activities for tourists and impressive "Fortuna Waterfall" that falls approximately 70 meters, easily accessible and near the town of La Fortuna, Whitewater rafting trips, hiking excursions, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, horseback riding, canopy tours and Caño Negro Boat Tours are just some of the many activities that one can enjoy while you are here.
